Nashville’s Redevelopment Efforts for Environmental Sustainability

The goal of Nashville’s Green Infrastructure Plan is to design a built environment that remains a functioning part of an ecosystem rather than existing apart from it. This is a relatively new approach to urban stormwater management that strategically integrates stormwater controls throughout the urban landscape. Part of Nashville’s ability to meet the challenge of balancing growth and environmental protection is through incorporating Green Infrastructure into both new and redevelopment efforts. An example of this is the use of tree box filters. Tree box filters are mini filtration areas beneath trees in in-ground containers, typically installed in urban areas. An efficient use of land, the surface appearance of a tree box is a tree or shrub in a tree grate along a curb. The vegetation sits in a concrete box of bio retention media through which street or parking lot runoff is filtered prior to discharge into the storm drain system. A single tree box can store 100-300 gallons of stormwater. Tree box filters are based on bio retention technology, with improvements in performance, reliability, pollutant removal, ease of construction, aesthetics, and maintenance costs. Blocked Storm Drain Creates Overflow in Holly Springs

In Holly Springs there are areas that have experienced flooding due to the heavy rain.  One such area in particular is a residential area on Craft St.  crews have been investigating three storm pipes in a resident’s yard as a possible problem, in addition to, a clay pipe drain.  The workers are in the process of investigating small sinkholes that appear to be caused by collapsing joints of the pipeline. There is also concern regarding a tree that is blocking the drain in a resident’s driveway and is suspected to have roots sunk into the pipe. After a heavy rainfall, workers will analyze the pipe to determine where and which pipes have sustained blockages. This will also maximize your awareness of the health of the pipelines in your home.  Here are a few suggestions when seeking the help of an expert: 1.
